The Chemist Down the Street: Seven Everyday Problems NHS Pharmacy First Can Tackle

Most of us have done it: woken up with a throat like sandpaper, or a nagging earache, and wondered whether it is worth trying to get a GP appointment. In many cases, the first place to try is your local community pharmacy. NHS Pharmacy First is designed for exactly those everyday problems — the ones that are not life-threatening, but still need a proper look and some sensible advice.

What Pharmacy First actually is

Pharmacy First is an NHS service in England. It lets community pharmacists assess and treat a set of common conditions, and supply prescription medicines under the NHS where appropriate. You do not need to book a GP appointment first, and you do not need to be registered with a particular pharmacy. Our consultation room is private, and the pharmacist will ask questions, look at the problem if needed, and explain the options.

It is not a replacement for your GP. It is a first port of call for specific minor illnesses, and a way to take pressure off stretched GP surgeries. If the pharmacist thinks your symptoms need a doctor, they will tell you and help you get the right care.

The seven conditions

The service covers seven common problems. Age ranges apply, so check with the pharmacy if you are unsure.

  1. Sore throat — for most people aged 5 and over.
  2. Earache — for children and young people aged 1 to 17.
  3. Sinusitis — for people aged 12 and over.
  4. Infected insect bite — for people aged 1 and over.
  5. Impetigo — for people aged 1 and over.
  6. Shingles — for people aged 18 and over.
  7. Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) — for women aged 16 to 64.

For each of these, the pharmacist can decide whether treatment is appropriate under the service. Sometimes the answer is a medicine; sometimes it is advice, rest, or a referral. The key point is that you get a proper assessment from a healthcare professional without waiting for a GP slot.

What happens in a consultation

You will be asked what is wrong, how long it has been going on, and whether you have any other health conditions or allergies. The pharmacist may take your temperature, look in your ear or throat, or ask about your symptoms in detail. They will check whether a Pharmacy First medicine is safe for you, and explain how to take it. If you are exempt from NHS prescription charges, the medicine will be free; otherwise the usual charge applies.

The pharmacist will also give you safety-netting advice — what to do if things do not improve, and when to seek further help. That might mean coming back, contacting your GP, or calling NHS 111.

What it cannot help with

Pharmacy First is not for emergencies. It is not for long-term conditions, complex mental health problems, or anything that needs a GP’s specialist knowledge. It also does not cover every age group or every symptom. If you have chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, a sudden weakness or confusion, heavy bleeding, or signs of a serious allergic reaction, call 999.

For urgent problems that are not life-threatening, NHS 111 can direct you to the right service. For ongoing or worsening symptoms, your GP is usually the best next step. And if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or have a child under the age threshold, check with a pharmacist or GP before assuming Pharmacy First is suitable.

Why use your local pharmacy?

Community pharmacies are open longer than many GP surgeries, and you can often walk in without an appointment. For people in and around Haydon Bridge, that can save a journey and a wait. We can also answer questions about medicines, side effects and interactions — the sort of practical advice that does not always need a doctor.

If you are not sure whether Pharmacy First is right for you, ring us or call in. We will tell you honestly whether we can help, or point you towards the service that can.
